The applet actually does have a status bar (and display the wave form).  However, I think that sometimes, depending on the size of a user's display, it does not show up...

How big is your monitor? 

Have you changed the size of the text on your screen in any way? 

In FireFox, if you click View>Zoom>Zoom In, it enlarges the size of the characters on your screen, but as a side effect, this reduces the space available for the Java Applet and it automatically compresses things, and the upload bar (and the waveform display) sometimes disappears.

I have added to ticket Trac to try to figure a way around this.

Ah! That's why I didn't see any applet? My browser (Seamonkey) is set to a fixed font and size, black on white text. Could the font size be too large?

It wasn't that. The applet didn't pass some kind of security check.

It's fixed now.
