I just came across the MyVox website, which "turns any phone into a microphone hooked up to your application". 

It's ad supported, and the audio ads are a little "over-the-top" (although they are short: 5-7 seconds), but it is a very interesting model that might finally get the "Voice Web" up and running with things like speech recognition based web searching, etc., without the need to invest serious money in telephony infrastructure.

This might also be interesting from a VoxForge perspective as another alternative to collect speech (maybe modifying trevarthen's VoxForgeIVR app to perform this task).
